Torch Lake is a must see if your Up North in Pure Michigan. It's iridescent crystal clear water is invitingly Carribean blue in color. The water temperature is not Carribean. So, be prepared for a bit of a jolt when you go for a swim.
The beautiful water of Torch is usually peaceful and uncrowded. It's perfect for water sports and just cruising.
One of the best parts of visiting Torch Lake is the drive up to it. Freeways turn into highways. Highways turn into country roads. Country roads turn into seasonal roads. You enjoy a lovely view of small town Michigan, forests, farms, and orchards.
Now, the orchards are fabulous. Even the abandoned orchards are hauntingly beautiful. The roadside is dotted with fruit stands. The larger orchards provide opportunities to pick the fruit yourself. And, of course, they all have unique little stores where you can purchase freshly picked fruit produce, and baked goods.
My favorite is King Orchards just a few miles from where we launch our boat on Torch Lake. We always stop by and purchase a freshly baked tart cherry pie.
The Montmorency Tart Cherries that King Orchards grow are what I wait for impatiently every year. Not only is their tart sweetness unsurpassed by any cherry I have ever eaten, they also boast terrific health benefits.
Hurry and visit soon. I think I'm seeing a hint of fall color on the leaves!
