One of our last water adventures here in Pure Michigan this summer was a relaxing trip floating down the lower Platte River.
We entered the river at a quiet spot with easy access. It's only about two miles of winding river near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore. It meanders through beautiful Pure Michigan scenery. The water in the river here is about 2 - 3 feet deep, crystal clear, and fairly warm in August.
The entire trip only took about 1 1/2 hours and gave us plenty of time to play at the mouth of the river. Here the Platte meets Lake Michigan and the warm water of the river is enveloped by the much colder depths of the Great Lake.
As you approach Lake Michigan the scenery changes from marshy woodlands into bleached white sand punctuated by tall grasses. Here the endangered Great Lakes piping plover nests.
The long sandy beach allows a great view of Lake Michigan with its massive dunes, lonely islands, and remote shoreline.
We enjoyed the river on a warm and sunny day. But as the weather turns cooler the Platte River can be a great way to see the changing of the seasons with its vibrant fall colors. Just try to stay in your boat as the water temperature will be changing, as well.
