When I think of Indian summer I picture any warm dry days that find their way into fall. The leaves are changing colors, perhaps it's already dipped below freezing at night and then we experience a warm spell.
If you read The Old Farmer's Almanac you will find that I am wrong. In fact, The Almanac is very specific about when Indian Summer occurs. It's November 11 - November 20. You can read all about it in "Indian Summer: What, Why, and When" on The Old Farmer's Almanac site.
When fall's Indian summer days have you looking for something tall and cool in the afternoon try this delicious twist on an old favorite, the orange julius.
Frosty Orange Smoothie
1 12 0z. can of frozen orange juice concentrate
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup ice
1/4 tsp. almond extract
1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 tblsp. sugar
Add all of the ingredients to a Blendtec blender.
Push the "smoothie" button and continue blending until the blender stops.
You may need to "pulse" the blender a few times to finish the Orange Julius.
Pour into a tall glass and garnish with a slice of orange.
It's been too long since I've had an Orange Julius. It would be a perfect way to hang on to summer sunshine.

This sounds *lovely*. Now I'm really thirsty (or is it hungry??). Thanks for the recipe!

Hi Barbara, It is so refreshing and the idea of an orange julius has a bit of retro appeal. Thanks for stopping by!
